A&M International's Garcia Named Second Vice President for SACUBO

Texas A&M International University's vice president for finance and administration, Jose Garcia, has been appointed second vice president of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO) at the group's recent meeting in Orlando, Florida.

As second vice president, Garcia will chair the Professional Development Committee that is charged with planning, organizing and conducting the SACUBO Fall Workshop to be held in Memphis, Tenn. This November. He is also a member of the Board of Directors and the Program Committee.

SACUBO, first organized in 1928, is an independent professional development and service organization assisting institutions of higher education in the southern 13 states region on the country. More than 950 universities and colleges are members.

SACUBO is one of four regional associations that comprise the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), which includes 2,100 member colleges and universities.

Garcia joined A&M International in January 1980 as the director of Physical Plant. During this period he also worked in the Purchasing and in the Business Office. In May 1980 he was promoted to business manager and served in this capacity until September 1988 when he was promoted to the newly established position of vice president of business and support services.

In 1991, he assumed the position of vice president for finance and administration and his responsibility's include the Business Office, Human Resources, Financial Aid, Physical Plant, Secretarial Services, Police, and the Computer & Telecommunications Services.Additionally, he assists the president with legislative affairs and other external activities.

He served as interim president of Texas A&M International University from January to July 31, 1996.

In addition to his SACUBO and NACUBO involvement, he serves the Texas Association of State Senior College and University Business Officers as President Elect. He has also participated in accreditation team visits with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Active in community affairs, he is currently serving the Chamber of Commerce as Co- Chair Military Affairs Committee, The United Way of Laredo, Borderfest (founding member), and Mary Help of Christians Catholic School Advisory Board.

He is also a member of the Washington1s Birthday Celebration Association, The Laredo Kiwanis Club (President 1983), and Division 26 Lt. Governor (1991 - 1992), Texas Oklahoma District, Kiwanis International.

He attended Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey, California; Puget Sound University,Tacoma, Washington; and obtained a BA in Political Science at Columbus College, Columbus, Georgia.

He is also a graduate of the Governor1s Executive Development Program, LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Major.

His more than 25 years of service include numerous staff and command positions in Korea, Vietnam and Latin America. Significant military schools included the Officer Candidate School, the Infantry Officers Advanced Course, and the Command and General Staff Course.
