Texas A&M International University will offer four Orientation programs in July and August for new students and parents and guests of new students.

The Orientation programs, themed "Mission Is Possible: Orientation, '97," will provide new students with the information they need to make their first year at A&M International a success, said organizer Gabriela Mendoza, Associate Director of the University's Office of Student Development.

"The transition from high school to University or junior college to University can be difficult. Orientation provides students with the information they need to navigate through that transition. Orientation also introduces new students to a network of free services available to A&M International students such as tutoring, career planning, and health services,"explained Mendoza.

The three Orientation programs designed specifically for new freshmen students will be offered on the following dates: Wednesday, July 16, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday, July 26, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and Tuesday, August 5, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. All Freshmen Orientations will begin in the Kinesiology and Convocation Center, room 102

Freshmen Orientation will include: a half-hour social where participants can meet fellow freshmen; "Tips for College Success," an information session which will explain grade point averages, degree plans, credit hours, and the college catalog; a presentation on time management, note taking, test taking, and balancing academic studies with work, on campus involvement, and social activities; lunch with University faculty and administrators in a fun, informal setting; an information session featuring representatives from the University's Division of Student Affairs and other University offices; a tour of the University's new student housing followed by an ice cream social at the facility's club house; and "Orientation Leaders Skit," an entertaining take on student life.

Freshmen Orientation participants who have not registered for Fall classes may also attend an advising session. University faculty and staff will help participants register for Fall classes. Students who plan to attend this session should bring SAT/ACT scores and TASP scores with them.

Freshmen Orientation participants who have already registered for Fall courses may take a tour of the campus, the Killam Library and the University's bookstore.

All new freshmen are required to attend Freshmen Orientation in order to have their Fall registration considered complete, Mendoza noted.

An Orientation program for new transfer and new graduate students and parents and guests of new students will be offered Tuesday, August 26, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. in Bullock Hall room 101. Portions of the program will be offered both in English and in Spanish.

The Transfer, Graduate, Parent/Guest Orientation will include informative presentations on the University and University life, a tour of the campus and new student housing, and an opportunity to meet with representatives from offices in the Division of Student Affairs, including the Financial Aid, Student Development, Career Planning, and Student Health Services and other University offices.

Students who attend the Aug. 26 Orientation program should note that an advising session will not be offered. The University will conduct Fall semester Registration on Aug. 27 - 28.
