Over 160 local and area middle and high school students from Jim Hogg, Webb, and Zapata counties are participating in Texas A&M International University's 13th Annual Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP) this summer.

Now in its 13th year, the TexPREP program provides high-ability local and area middle and high school students with exposure to university-level mathematics, engineering and science studies.

TexPREP Program participants attend daily classes at A&M International for eight weeks of intensive learning.

Courses include logic, introduction to engineering, computer science, problem-solving, technical writing, research and study, physics, and career orientation. Participants also attend field trips and talks by guest lecturers who work in the fields of engineering or science.

The TexPREP Program is free for all participants. No tuition, academic or text book fees are assessed.

Grants and donations from private industry and private and public institutions defray program expenses.

This year, program costs are being defrayed in part by grants from the Texas Coordinating Board and NASA, and in-kind contributions from local industry and public institutions.

Pledges ranging from $500 to $1,000 have been made by Chevron U.S.A., Mejia Engineering, Laredo Manufacturing Association, Sanchez O'Brien Oil and Gas Corporation, and Anzon Inc.

Transportation to the University is being provided by the school districts and by enhanced public service from the City of Laredo.

United Independent School District designated A&M International as a site for the UISD lunch program.

The summer TexPREP Program began in June and will operate at the University through late July. Graduation ceremonies are scheduled for July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the United Independent School District Cafetorium.
