Recent changes by both the Texas Education Association and the State Board for Higher Education to the eligibility process for ExCET exams have been announced by the Texas A&M International University College of Education. The changes will take effect Sept. 1.

"Both agencies have determined that in order to provide better eligibility clearances and establish stronger accountability, all ExcET candidates who are declared eligible will have a barcode affixed to their application, " said Dr. Rosa Maria Vida, Dean of the College of Education.

"This is an effort to centralize and establish a localized clearinghouse for ExCET applications that will follow clear eligibility criteria. Applications that are determined ineligible will not receive a bar-coded application and will not be able to take the ExCET exam, " she explained.

Dr. Vida cautioned that interested ExCET candidates should budget sufficient time into their application process to assure that their application is completed in time to meet registration deadlines for ExCEt exams. The first such registration deadline is Oct. 3.

Current eligibility criteria for ExCET consideration include completion of program requirements for an approved certification program, specific GPA requirements for both overall and specialization areas, attendance at ExCET review sessions, completion of a required internship or externship, and passage with a 70% score on an ExCET pre-test.
