Persons who enroll in an "Italian Renaissance" history course at Texas A&M International University this Spring will need a passport and suitcase because the course includes a 10 day trip to Italy.

The course, HIST 4390 for undergraduates and HIST 5310 for graduate students, will be taught by Dr. Stanley Green, Professor of History at A&M International.

Dr. Green explained the course will entail 35 hours of classwork to be completed at the University during the Spring semester plus a 10-day trip to Italy in mid-May, during the end-of-semester break between Spring and Summer classes.

"The trip will not interfere with Spring or Summer classes since it is scheduled during the semester break when classes are not ongoing," said Green.

In Italy students will tour Milan, Verona, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Assissi, Pompeii, the seaside resort city of Sorrento, and Rome, "the Eternal City." Optional excursions are available to Pisa, site of the Leaning Tower, the Isle of Capri, famous for the shimmering Blue Grotto; and, in Rome, the Catacombs, mysterious burial chambers, and the Appian Way.

Tour highlights include the Grand Canals of Venice; Florence's Piazza della Signoria, where Michelangelo's David originally stood; the Basilica di San Franceso in the medieval pink-stoned town of Assissi; and St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Colosseum in Rome.

The course is open to any A&M International student, including high school students who are accepted into the University's Concurrent Enrollment program.

Green believes the course will provide a unique and exciting learning experience, one that will allow students to explore firsthand the sites which transformed Italy during the Renaissance.

"Travel is an education unto itself. New places inspire a curiosity about different cultures, people, and ways of life. This course will change forever the way students see the world," he said.

Green hopes the unique course will be an incentive for members of the community who wish to begin or continue studies at A&M International.

"It is sometimes difficult for people with full-time jobs or personal commitments to return to the classroom. But this is a class with a view--a view to the past, to the world, and to a future full of new experiences and possibilities," he added.

Students who enroll in the course will pay standard tuition and fees plus tour fees of $1,631 if roomed in three- or four- bedded rooms, or $1, 841 for those in double occupancy rooms.

Students who are over 25 or will turn 25 during the tour are automatically assigned double occupancy rooms. Single occupancy rooms are available for an additional fee. Students under 25 are automatically assigned to three- or four- bedded rooms. Double occupancy rooms are available for an additional fee.

Students who take advantage of Early Registration for Spring have until December 18 to pay course tuition and fees. Early Registration ends November 14. Regular Registration is January 14 - 15.

Payment schedule for tour fees is as follows: $90 non-refundable sign-up fee to be submitted with the tour application, $400 partial payment thirty days after the tour application is received, and balance due 90 days prior to departure.

Tour fees include round-trip airfare from San Antonio, 8 overnight hotel stays, daily continental breakfast and dinner in carefully selected restaurants, transfer fees and intercity transportation, 4 comprehensive sight-seeing tours led by licensed local guides, a walking tour, 8 visits to special attractions, plus the full-time services of a bilingual tour director.
