Laredo College Night, one of the area's most successful annual college recruitment activities, will be hosted by the new campus of Texas A&M International University this November 12 from 7-9 p.m. in the Kinesiology-Convocation Building.

The event was previously held at the Laredo Civic Center. It is a combined effort of the Laredo Independent School District, the United Independent School District and hosted by A&M International.

Laredo College Night is one of some 300 events coordinated by the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO). College and university recruiters travel across the state from September through December to meet with potential students.

Ramiro Ramirez, Director of Guidance at Laredo Independent School District, is the area coordinator for the Laredo program and said response from recruiters coming to the event has been higher than in previous years.

"This year we have over 46 recruiters registered and expect some may register on site. This event traditionally sees over 1000 students attend and we expect to exceed that number," Ramirez said.

He noted that in addition to Texas colleges and universities, a number of recruiters are coming from other parts of the United States and Mexico.

Dr. Stephen Brown, Dean of Student Affairs at A&M International, said the move is welcome and the University looks forward to hosting recruiters, visiting students and their parents on the campus.

"We are really excited to be hosting this opportunity. We know that many Laredo and area students who are higher education-bound have identified this single evening as one of the most important information exchanges for them and many credit this event with helping them to make an informed decision about their future," Dr. Brown said.

Brown said the University's new facilities uniquely lend themselves to the event and will afford students and their parents an opportunity to explore Texas' newest four-year University as well.

"We are looking forward to having these students on campus and in addition to proving a forum for meeting with other college/university representatives, give them an opportunity to visit with our faculty, staff and fellow students, and tour our new facilities here," he added.

Betty Momayezi, Director of Enrollment Management at A&M International, said that recruiters find the Laredo area an attractive recruiting visit for a number of reasons.

"There are six 5A high schools in Laredo, communications and performing arts and health sciences magnet schools, two private high schools and four private high schools in Nuevo Laredo. Most importantly, there is a commitment from students and their parents to better themselves through higher education. These reasons help to make our area very attractive to recruiters," she explained.

The University will host a Border Style Welcome Dinner for recruiters participating in this year's College Night.

The event gets underway at 7 p.m. in the Kinesiology-Convocation Building, part of the University's new Phase II. It will continue till 9 p.m.

High School students interested in attending should contact their respective high school counselor. Some schools give special credit and provide instruction for their students attending.
