A&M International's Dean Brown Presents at National Conference

Dr. M. Stephen Brown, Dean of Student Affairs at Texas A&M International University, headed a panel of experts for a symposium on affirmative action at the 43rd Annual Conference of the Education Law Association held recently in Seattle, Washington.

The symposium, titled "What Do We Do Now? Affirmative Action Revisited," addressed the search for other routes to minority recruitment and diversity in the wake of Hopwood v. State of Texas. Selected cases were explored and the socio-economic, political, and educational implications of the equal protection clause were examined. The presentation included interactive dialogue with participants.

Dr. Brown's co-presenters for the symposium were James J. Van Patten, professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of Arkansas, Fayettville, and J. Philip Smith, attorney-at-law and graduate assistant, Leadership Department, College of Education, University of Memphis.

In March, Dr. Brown, along with David VerMilyea, Director of the University's Office of Student Development, Arturo Sanchez, President of the University's Student Government Association, and colleagues from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, will present at the national program of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in Philadelphia. The presentation, "Collaborative Student Leadership Development: How Three Universities Joined Forces and Resources," will detail how A&M International and two institutions in the Texas A&M University System are seeking to improve students' leadership skills.
