AAUW Adelante Reading Club Meets Monthly to Appreciate Literary Work

Are you interested in joining a group that besides enjoying literary work that explore women's issues discusses the books in detail? If so, the Association of American University Women Adelante Book Club may be a group for you to join.

The Adelante Book Club, which started its reading series in September, invites the community to attend its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 12 at Cafe Del Barrio, located at 1912 Matamoros St. The group will discuss Gloria Naylor's "Mama Day" at the meeting.

The AAUW is a national organization that brings to light women's issues and stresses on the importance of education, Cantu said. The group meets once a month to discuss different books assigned to every month.

The club will read "Written by Herself: Autobiographies of American Women: An Anthology" edited by Jill Kerr Conway at the March 19 meeting.

Then, at 7 p.m. at the April 16 meeting, the group will discuss Kay Redfield Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind" and at 7 p.m. at May 14 meeting, participants will read Jean Wakatsuki Houston's "Farewell to Manzanar."

Other books and their respective meeting dates include "Mothers" by Jax Peters Lowell at 7 p.m. on June 18, "The Book of Ruth" by Jane Hamilton at 7 p.m. on July 16 and "Daughters of Another Path: Experiences of American Women Choosing Islam" by Carol Inway at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27.
