Texas A&M International University students are invited to apply for a 10-week summer program which affords outstanding undergraduates an opportunity to work on academic research projects at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

The Texas A&M University Summer Research Opportunity Programs (SROP) for Undergraduate Students pairs qualified juniors and seniors with a faculty mentor in the student's area of interest. Students will assist the faculty mentor with a research project or will work on a mutually agreed upon research project.

The program also will prepare students for graduate school and graduate academic study through workshops and activities designed to familiarize students with living in an academic environment, preparing to take standardized tests and applying to graduate schools. Cultural and educational activities will be offered as time permits.

The 10-week program is scheduled from May 31 - August 7, 1998 in College Station. Program participants will receive a maximum $2,500 stiped. Housing, tuition, meals, and fees will be deducted from the stipend. Out-of-State students may be provided some assistance for travel expenses.

Positions in the SROP Program will be offered on a competitive basis to US citizens and permanent residents who will enter their junior or senior college year during the 1998-99 academic year. Participants must maintain a 2.75 or better grade point average during the academic year and must be enrolled as a student during the program.

A&M International students who wish to apply for the program must submit a complete application package which includes: a completed SROP application form, a complete official copy of undergraduate transcripts with Fall 1997 grades listed, and one letter of recommendation on departmental letterhead from an A&M International faculty member who can assess the applicant's ability for academic research and graduate school.

Students who need SROP application forms or more information should contact Dr. Mario Garcia-Rios, Assistant Professor of Biology at A&M International, at 326-2585 or by electronic mail at mgarcia@tamiu.edu.

Journalists who need additional information or help with media requests and interviews should contact the Office of Public Affairs and Information Services at pais@tamiu.edu
