A&M International Offers Talk on Weight Reduction Jan. 28

Anyone who wants to shed some pounds this year is invited to attend a free talk on "Successful Weight Reduction" to be held at Texas A&M International University on Wednesday, January 28 from 12 noon - 1 p.m. in Canseco Hall room 101.

The talk will be presented by physician Dr. David Garza, president of the Health Care Alliance of Laredo.

Dr. Garza will provide current information about the best approaches to weight loss. He will also discuss the issues surrounding the use of the diet medications Redux and Phen/Fen. The talk will conclude with a question and answer period.

Persons who attend are invited to bring their lunch to the presentation. Beverages and healthy snacks will be served.

Those who attend are also invited to enter a healthy food recipe contest to be judged after the talk. Contestants must provide both a sample of a healthy, low calorie, or low fat dish and a written copy of the recipe. A first place prize will be awarded.

Copies of all submitted recipes will be available through the University's Office of Student Health Services at a later date.

The recipe contest and talk are part of a series of free lunchtime talks sponsored by the University's Safety, Health, and Wellness Initiative. Other scheduled lunchtime talks include: "Heart Healthy Living," Feb. 11; "Fitness Through Aerobic and Resistance Training," Feb. 25; "Rites of Spring: Preventing and Overcoming Sports Injuries," Mar. 4; "Sexual Diversity Panel Discussion," Apr. 29.

All talks will be held from 12 noon - 1 p.m. The aerobics talk will be held in the Kinesiology/Convocation Building. All other talks will be held in Bullock Hall room 101.

Presenters will include local physicians, health care professionals, and University faculty.
