Citing a desire to help nursing students at Texas A&M International University to secure their bachelors degrees, the Canseco Foundation recently announced a scholarship endowment of $25,000 to the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing.

Speaking at a private reception held in Canseco Hall, Patti Canseco Bruce, president of the Canseco Foundation, said the gift was intended to further underscore the family's support of the University.

"Our family is honored to have helped to assure the construction of Canseco Hall through a gift in our father's memory and now would like to further assist those students who have chosen careers in nursing at the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing. Their education here will help to address this community's pressing need for nursing expertise and service in advanced critical care and trauma services," she explained.

Dr. Charles Jennett, University president, accepted the Foundation's gift and applauded the support that will be provided Canseco School of Nursing students.

"This is a marvelous gift that certainly builds on the generosity shown by the Cansecos in the construction of this facility. Our students are blessed to have the Foundation's support and we would encourage others to follow their exemplary lead," Jennett said.

Dr. Susan Baker, director of the Canseco School of Nursing, said the scholarship support provided by the Canseco Foundation will be most welcome.

"In addition to providing financial support for our students to complete their baccalaureate degrees while continuing to work in the community as registered nurses, this scholarship endowment will also provide increased opportunities for specialized learning experiences," she noted.

Rebecca Sepulveda, director of development at A&M International, said the scholarship endowment will grow over the years, supporting future nursing students in their educational pursuits for years to come.

"This gift will be invested with our endowment pool that is managed by The Texas A&M University System. The interest from the endowment will be distributed to the Scholarship Fund to provide student assistance while the corpus will continue to grow," she said.

Joining in the presentation were family members Conti Canseco Meehan, Francisco R. Canseco, Kim Canseco, Pati Canseco Bruce, Ceci Canseco Keck, Carlos Canseco, Margara Canseco Kontny, and Jorge Canseco.

The late Consuelo Sada Canseco provided a generous gift that funded construction of the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing, part of the campus' Phase II construction dedicated in 1997.

Her husband, the late Dr. F. M. Canseco, was a much-respected physician and surgeon in Laredo who delivered medical care in diverse specializations for over 55 years. The couple raised eight children, encouraging each to utilize education to secure their futures.
