A&M International Students May Apply for Internship Opportunties

Texas A&M International University students are invited to apply for a 16-week paid summer internship program for minorities, women, and economically disadvantaged students pursuing environmental, engineering, science-related, and public administration studies.

The Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program offers summer employment opportunities with select employer sponsors such as Bayer Inc., Dow Chemical Company, HDR Engineering Inc., Lucent Technologies, Texaco Chemical Company, and Union Carbide Corporation.

The Internship Program begin May 11 and ends August 31. Accepted students will receive a minimum compensation of $1,400 per month for undergraduate interns and a minimum of $1,600 per month for graduate interns.

Deadline to apply for the program is Friday, February 27.

A&M International students who wish to apply for the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program should contact either of the following A&M International faculty members: Dr. Mario Garcia-Rios, assistant professor of Biology, at 326-2585 or mgarcia@tamiu.edu, or Dr. Sushma Krishnamurthy, assistant professor of Biology, at 326-2584 or skrishna@tamiu.edu.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications: must have completed 60 undergraduate semester hours by the end of the fall 1997 semester or be a current graduate student; must be enrolled full-time during the spring 1998 semester, have a minimum 2.0 academic grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of application; and must be enrolled in environmental and/or science-related disciplines including but not limited to, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, public health or public administration. Additionally, all applicants are required to return full-time to a college or university in the fall 1998 semester.

The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program was established in 1992 by the Texas Water Commission, a predecessor agency to the TNRCC, in honor of the late US Congressman Mickey Leland's effective effort to promote a clean and healthy environment.
