Persons pursuing a higher education will have an opportunity to earn college credit by exam when Texas A&M International University offers College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exams on Tuesday, March 31.

Credit by CLEP Exam can be obtained in several subject areas including Composition, Literature, Foreign Language, History, Social Sciences, Science, and Mathematics.

A&M International allows students to receive up to 33 semester credit hours by exam for specified freshmen- and sophomore-level courses. Other colleges and universities throughout the US also accept credit by exam.

Zulema Marroquin, Associate Director of Testing at A&M International, said CLEP Exams can save students both time and money.

"CLEP Exams allow students who have gained college-level knowledge through independent study or prior training to accumulate credit toward a degree, earn exemption from taking introductory courses, and move ahead to more advanced courses," she explained.

While CLEP Exams are designed primarily for nontraditional students and adult learners, any student who has a level of competency in a CLEP Exam subject area, such as Spanish language, can earn credit by exam.

Exam fee for each CLEP is $43 and service fee is $10 per exam. Persons who wish to register for a CLEP Exam should obtain a CLEP Registration-Admission Form from the University's Testing Center, located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library room 203, in the Academic Enrichment Center. The completed form, along with a check or money order for the Exam fee made out to "CLEP" should be submitted to the University's Testing Center by Tuesday, March 24. Students will be issued a receipt from the Testing Center which gives the exam location, date and time. Students may then proceed to the University's Business Office to pay the $10 service fee.

For more information on the CLEP Exam, please call the University's Testing Center at 326-2131 or visit offices in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library room 203.

University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.
