Counseling, Psychotherapy Conference Scheduled at A&M International Mar. 27

The first annual conference on "Counseling and Psychotherapy on the Border" will be held at Texas A&M International University on Friday, March 27 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the University's north Laredo campus, 5201 University Boulevard.

The conference, themed "Cultural Collaboration and Celebration for the 21st Century," will feature skill-training workshops, scholarly papers, informal discussion groups, and over 20 presentations which explore a broad array of topics. The focus of the conference will be on issues which will impact the practice of counseling and psychotherapy en la frontera from 1998 through 2010.

Topics to be explored include counseling techniques and therapeutic models effective for working with clients of Mexican descent; social, political, and economic trends of the border region which affect the counseling profession; and international perspectives and practices of psychotherapy.

The conference will begin in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (room 319) with registration and a welcoming reception After a presentation by the key note speaker, participants will attend four workshops of their choice, two in the morning, and two in the afternoon following a catered lunch served in the Great Room. The conference will conclude with a closing session in the Great Room.

Between sessions, participants will have the opportunity to network with many other counseling professionals from South Texas and northern Mexico.

Registration fee if registered by March 23 is $60 for professionals, and $25 for students or presenters. On-site registration fee is $75 for professionals, $30 for students and presenters. Registration fee includes lunch and LPC, NCC or TAADAC credit units.

The conference is being sponsored by the University's Department of Psychology and the Office of Continuing Education.
