University Students to be Inducted Into Alpha Kappa Delta Fri., May 1

Three Texas A&M International University students will be inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society, on Friday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (room 319).

During a brief initiation ceremony, the inductees, Maria Van Dyke, Mauro Rodriguez, and Nancy Garza, will each be presented with a certificate to commemorate their lifetime membership in Alpha Kappa Delta.

Sandra Sanders, a sociologist and associate director of the University's Academic Enrichment Center, will address the new inductees.

Membership in Alpha Kappa Delta is limited to students with superior scholarship and serious interest in sociology.

A&M International was granted charter membership in Alpha Kappa Delta last year. The A&M International chapter is officially named Alpha Zeta of Texas. Faculty sponsor is Dr. Cecilia Garza, assistant professor of sociology at A&M International.

A&M International students inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta last year were Tamara Davis Casso, Estella Yvette Coronado, Jaime Gabriel Garza, Karen Louise Hale, Veronica G. Martinez, Edward P. Matos, and Melinda Vidaurri.

Founded in 1920, Alpha Kappa Delta derives its name from the first letters of three Greek words: anthropon (mankind), katamanthaneion (to investigate thoroughly or to conduct research), and diakonesein (for the purpose of service). When translated freely, the three-word phrase expresses both the goal and the method of the organization--to study humankind for the purpose of service.
