University Offers Seminar on "Preventing Child Maltreatment"

Texas A&M International University's Office of Continuing Education will hold a seminar titled "Preventing Child Maltreatment" at the University on Friday, April 24 from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in Bullock Hall room 206.

The seminar is designed for persons who care for young children including parents, school supervisors, teachers, teacher aides, and day care providers. It will be conducted by Dr. Cecilia Garza, assistant professor of sociology at A&M International.

Tuition is $35 per participant. Interested persons may register for the seminar by visiting the University's Office of Continuing Education located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, room 332 West.

The seminar will provide participants with the tools necessary for detecting, dealing with, and preventing child abuse and neglect. The roles and responsibilities of professional caregivers will be explored, signs of child abuse and neglect will be discussed, and the reporting process will be explained.

Seminar participants will also receive tips for talking to a child or parent, sample staff selection procedures and job descriptions, a code of ethical conduct of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and sample forms and letters.
