THECB Gives Nod to Two New Degrees at A&M International

In action Thursday, April 23, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board gave unanimous approval to the addition of two new degrees to the Texas A&M International University degree inventory.

The new degrees are a bachelor of arts degree in communication and a master's degree in Spanish. Coursework for both degrees can begin as early as summer or fall of 1998.

University president Charles Jennett said the approvals raise the number of degrees to 24 undergraduate and 22 graduate and signal the University's continued growth and development.

"These degrees were developed in response to needs from our service community. They are important additions to our inventory and we look forward to welcoming students who have selected these undergraduate or graduate majors," Jennett said.

Dr. Jerry Thompson, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities which will direct the new degrees, said student interest in both degrees has been strong.

"We've had students who have been monitoring the progress of both degrees with a great deal of interest. We've seen a great deal of interest in the communications degree from our local high schools, especially the Trevino Magnet School which has a strong communications preparation and focus. I believe both degrees will soon become among our most popular offerings in the College of Arts and Humanities," he said.
