University to Present Student Club Awards Tuesday, April 14

Recipients of the "University Life Awards" will be announced at an awards ceremony and reception to be held at Texas A&M International University on Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (room 319).

The University Life Awards honor outstanding chartered student organizations, their sponsors and members. Awards will be presented in six categories: Outstanding Community Service, Most Outstanding Sponsor, Leader of the Year, Freshman Excellence, Most Active Student Organization, and Coolest Shirt. The awards and the reception are sponsored by the University's Office of Student development.

Nominees for Outstanding Community Service are the Political Science Association, Student Accounting Society, A&M International Police Explorers, and Tau Sigma Chi - Criminal Justice.

Nominees for Most Outstanding Sponsor are Dr. William B. Duncan, Political Science Association; Dr. Firooz Khosraviyani, Mathematical Association of America; Dr. George Kostopoulous, Electronic Commerce Association; Ricardo Ortegon, Student Ambassadors; and Dr. Jaqueline Power, Student Accounting Society.

Nominees for Leader of the Year are Minerva Ayala, Student Accounting Society; Michael Chandarlis, Chemistry Club; Reymundo Martinez, Tau Sigma Chi - Criminal Justice and Carlos Perez, Political Science Association.

Nominees for Freshman Excellence are Roger Allen, Tau Sigma Chi - Criminal Justice; Gilbert Cardenas, Student Ambassadors; Victor Gonzalez, Student Accounting Society; Adriana Juarez, Chemistry Club; and Laura Rodriguez, Rainbow Education Association of Laredo.

Nominees for Most Active Student Organization are International Business Association, Political Science Association Student Accounting Society, A&M International Police Explorers, and Tau Sigma Chi - Criminal Justice.

Nominees for Coolest Shirt are International Business Association, Rainbow Education Association of Laredo, Student Accounting Society, Student Ambassadors, and Tau Sigma Chi - Criminal Justice.

Gabriela Mendoza, Associate Director of Student Development, said the University Life Awards recognize the contributions, hard work, and dedication that the most active student organizations have achieved during the 1997-1998 academic year.

"Involvement in one or more of A&M International's student organizations can add an important dimension to a student's University experience. We hope the Awards will heighten the organizations' visibility and encourage more University students to become involved," she explained.

The University currently has over 30 chartered student organizations with interested ranging from accounting to track and field.
