A recent $5,000 donation to Texas A&M International University by Border Beverage Inc., the local distributor for Miller Brewing Company, will be used to support the newly-created President's Scholarship Fund, University officials said.

The creation of the new fund and the donation by Border Beverage Inc. were announced at a May 8 news conference.

The President's Scholarship Fund, which will be supported by gifts and grants from various donors, is an academic based program created to encourage top graduating high school seniors to attend Texas A&M International University.

Border Beverage Inc., made the $5,000 donation together with the announcement of "El Kick de Texas," a state-wide fundraising event sponsored by Miller Lite. The effort is expected to raise funds for the President's Scholarship Fund and organizations such as United Way and its affiliates.

Organizers of "El Kick de Texas" hope to raise $25,000 to $40,000 for the President's Scholarship Fund.

University Provost Dr. Larry Boyd said that the Miller Brewing Company donation will provide much-needed assistance to the new fund and help attract top students to the University.

"This fund will help us because it will allow us to compete with larger and richer schools in attracting the best students to our University," Boyd said.

The President's Scholarship Fund is a four-year award covering tuition, fees and textbook. Recipients must be in the top 15 percent of their high school graduating class, have a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or better and SAT score of 1,000 or ACT score of 22 and a letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member of the graduate's high school.

The scholarship is renewable for each subsequent year provided the student continues to meet the academic criteria. The University's Scholarship Committee will select President's Scholarship recipients.
