A&M International's Dr. Susan Baker Receives Community Development Award
Dr. Susan Baker, director of Texas A&M International University's Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing, has been named the recipient of one of The Texas A&M University System's Community Development Service Awards.
Dr. Baker was one of 18 community and university recipients chosen for exemplary public and community development service across the State.
Awards were presented at the "Meeting the Challenge: Best Practices in Building Communities Symposium" sponsored by the System's Office of Community Development.
The Award was presented by A&M International president Dr. Charles Jennett and Daniel Hernandez, associate vice chancellor, Office of Community Development, in ceremonies at the new George Bush Presidential Conference Center.
Baker was recognized for promoting partnerships between faculty and students of the Canseco School of Nursing and other members of the Laredo community to address a variety of community health needs.
The Symposium featured over 40 Best Practices presentations designed to address health, economic development, technology, safety, environment, education, higher education and social issues facing communities.
Panel sessions were conducted each day with distinguished leaders from across the State and nation representing industry, the Legislature, higher education, school districts and community-based organizations.
Baker, a member of the A&M International faculty since 1994, holds her Ph.D. in Preventive Medicine and Community Health from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She holds an MS in Community Mental Health Nursing and a BS in Nursing, both from Boston University. She also holds a BA in English/Music from Carleton College in Minnesota.
Baker has most recently led the initiative to secure approval of A&M International's Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing program now being considered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
A much-published nurse scholar, she has conducted numerous projects in Latin America, with a special focus on nursing programs in Brazil and has traveled and lectured extensively there.
She is a member of the American Nurses' Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Public Health Association, the Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric Nursing, the National Council for International Health and the Laredo Organization of Nurse Executives.
She also serves on Advisory Committees and Boards of Directors of many health-related Laredo organizations.
