University Police Host Reception for Eight Nuevo Laredo Officers

The Texas A&M International University Police Department held a reception at the University recently to recognize eight Nuevo Laredo police officers who will attend a two-week Drug Abuse Resistance and Education (DARE) training in Tucson, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico.

University Police Chief Harry W. Stege and University Police Officer Sylvia B. Steele arranged for the training and secured funding from DARE America for the officers' training and travel expenses.

The Nuevo Laredo officers who will attend the DARE training are Juan Becerra, Anselmo Cruz, Ramona Fernandez, Carlos Gomez, Ricardo Guevara, Jorge Martinez, Rene Martinez, and Gloria Rincon.

Jorge Martinez, who works for the Crime Prevention department in Nuevo Laredo, is a student at A&M International and a part-time student employee with the University Police Department.

After the 8 officers complete their training, they will implement DARE programs in Nuevo Laredo and visit Nuevo Laredo schools to speak to students about the importance of leading a drug-free life.

The A&M International Police Department conducts DARE programs at local schools as part of the University's commitment to community service.

In addition to sponsoring the DARE program at local schools, the University Police Department sponsors an Explorer Post, an organization designed to provide positive interaction with police officers and youth interested in law enforcement careers.
