A&M International Students Attend Conference in Mexico City

Five members of the Texas A&M International University student organization LUCHA (Latinos United for Culture, Heritage, and Advancement) traveled to Mexico City for the 25th annual conference of the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies.

Attending the conference were A&M International students Margarita Colon, Rosario Vela, Sharon Gonzalez-Bouvier, and Lizette Gutierrez, and LUCHA sponsor Viky Garcia, director of the University's Office of Career Planning and Placement.

The A&M International group attended a number of presentations on Chicano issues including "The Anatomy of Sexism within Chicano Studies," "Local and Global in Dialogue: Chicana and Mexicana Writers as Transitional Feminists," and "Violence and Militarization on the US-Mexico Border."

LUCHA aims to represent and unify the active Latino community on Latino issues, serves as a united voice for its members' concerns, and empowers members to more effectively deal with policies and procedures. Activities supported by the organization include sponsoring discussions over current issues, and hosting guest speakers who have an enriching knowledge of the Latino culture.
