Expanded student scholarships at Texas A&M International University will be the beneficiary of the upcoming 1998 Dusty Fun Run and Walk, Saturday, Nov. 14 at A&M International.

Participants can choose from competitive 5 and 10K runs, in addition to a non-competitive two-mile Fun Walk. Local KGNS-TV weatherman Richard "Heatwave" Berler is this year's honorary chair of the event.

A&M International president Dr. Charles Jennett said that community support is essential to student success at A&M International and events like the Dusty Fun Run help to assure that success.

"At A&M International, we strive to attract the best and brightest students to our beautiful campus every year. In order to achieve this goal, however, we need to make sure our students have the necessary financial support to pursue their academic endeavors. With the partnership of our community, we are able to say that all A&M International students can receive the assistance they need to make their dreams come true," Dr. Jennett said.

Michelle Alexander, vice president of Institutional Advancement, concurred that community partnerships are crucial for A&M International's success in the 21st Century.

"A&M International has been the fortunate recipient of the kind assistance from the State of Texas. We know, however, that we cannot rely on this help alone. We must continue to actively seek community partners who are ready to invest in the future of our youth and thus the future of our community. We are greatly encouraged by the partnership of local and area businesses and encourage broad participation in this event benefiting student scholarships," Alexander said.

Corporate sponsors of the 1998 Dusty Fun Run and Walk include Central Power and Light, Aguirre Corporation (Dallas), Falcon National Bank, H-E-B Grocery Company , Norwest Bank and NBC Bank of Laredo.
