This fall, Texas A&M International University will present a dynamic program that promises to dance its audience through Laredo's unique cultural legacy and history.

The 1998 Fall Dance Concert, featuring the A&M International Dance Performance and Flamenco Troupes, is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Kinesiology/Convocation Building. Entrance will be free and guest performers will include members of the A&M International High Twisters and the Ballet Folklórico.

Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of dance, said that this dance concert will showcase the efforts of the most talented dance students at A&M International while offering a top-caliber presentation that borrows from the rich cultural heritage of a city that has survived under seven flags.

"This first A&M International dance concert has seen students put in a semester's worth of energy to ensure quality performance. All students, including those in the Ballet Folklórico and the High Twisters, will perform according to a diversified repertoire that musically represents our city's special history. We would like to invite the community to join us for this special show and dance through this history with us," Leyendecker said.

The program will include pieces such as "Tanguillos de Cádiz" (traditional tune), "Just a Raggy Waltz" (Dave Brubeck), "Peces en el Río" (Gypsy Kings) and "La Vida Breve" (Manuel Falla), folk standards including "Deep in the Heart of Texas" and "The Streets of Laredo," "Ensueño" (Mecano) and the movie theme from "Titanic."

The concert is one of several fine and performing arts events planned as the University showcases its growth in the arts arena and prepares for Phase III construction of its multi-million dollar Fine and Performing Arts Center.
