A&M International to Receive Award from Special Olympics Texas

Texas A&M International University has been named recipient of the Special Olympics Texas Award for Outstanding Service from Agencies, Civic and Service Organizations.

The award will be presented to University representatives at the 1998 Winter Games Opening Ceremony to be held at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Nov. 6. Over 2,000 athletes, including 75 from Laredo, plus families, friends, supporters, and media from throughout the state are expected to attend the ceremony.

Maribel Santoya, Special Olympics Texas Area Director, nominated the University for the award.

"Texas A&M International University has provided tremendous support for Special Olympics. The University has hosted our annual fundraiser, "Roundball on the Rio," for two years and has committed to hosting the event again next year. University staff and students have also contributed time, talent, and resources to help Special Olympics Texas accomplish its mission," Santoya said.

Margaret Larsen, president and CEO of Special Olympics Texas extended her thanks to A&M International for the University's outstanding service to Special Olympics Texas.

"Throughout our 30 years, Special Olympics Texas has undergone many changes, but one constant has been the dedication and support of our athletes, volunteers, coaches, family members, corporate sponsors, and other organizations. This award reflects the importance of [A&M International's] involvement to our program," said Larsen.

Dr. Charles Jennett, president of A&M International, said the University is proud to receive the Special Olympics Texas Award.

"It is a great honor for us to contribute to the success of this organization, that's why we've committed to hosting "Roundball on the Rio" again next year . We're glad to help because we know Special Olympics Texas helps this community and we are committed to our community," explained Dr. Jennett.
