Texas A&M International University will hold a press conference on Monday, Jan 11 at 11 a.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library to announce details of the University's Spring 1999 "Alcohol Abuse Prevention Art Contest."

The contest, which will be held in April, is open to local and area high school students. Six winning entrants will be awarded scholarships to Texas A&M International University.

Organizers hope the art contest will both showcase the talents of young artists and increase awareness that alcohol abuse is a health-related barrier to learning.

"Alcohol abuse threatens the well-being of students and their potential for contribution to society. We want the community to be aware of the risks associated with the use and abuse of alcohol. We hope this contest will heighten awareness throughout Laredo and beyond," explained Dr. Stephen Brown, dean of Student Affairs at A&M International.

For more information on the University's "Alcohol Abuse Prevention Art Contest," please contact Angie Cantrell, director of Student Health Services at A&M International, at 326-2235.

University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.
