"Swingin' at the U" Concert Set at A&M International Jan. 17

Big Band sounds, sudden sambas and the once-again hip sounds of swing will be part of a special musical concert performance at Texas A&M International University Sunday Jan. 17 from 5-7 p.m.

"Swingin' at the U," featuring La Orquesta Internacional, is the second in a continuing series of benefits for the A&M International Music Equipment program which targets the purchase of music equipment for the A&M International Band. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and is payable at the door.

Refreshments will be served after the concert.

"La Orquesta Internacional, " directed by Dr. Humberto González, A&M International assistant professor in the College of Education, is comprised of a number of local music educators and performing professionals.

González said the group includes a broad spectrum of performers with decades of combined musical experience. He noted that the resurgence of interest in Big Band and Swing music sounds sweet to all members.

"With the new fascination with swing music by groups like the Brian Setzer Orchestra, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, we're seeing a lot of this great music make a welcome return to the airwaves. It's now even featured in Gap commercials," he noted.

Special guest artists for the event will include vocalist Norma Eliza, tenor saxophonist Eddie Galvan and vocalist and popular Pro-8 News anchor Richard Noriega.

Among composers with selections that will be featured at the concert are Jobim, Carmichael, Prima, Ellington, Weill and Domínguez.

A dance floor will be in place for those wishing to demonstrate ballroom, swing or samba steps.

A&M International President Dr. Charles Jennett said that "Swingin' at the U" follows fast on the heels of the successful "Jazzin' at the U event held in September which featured jazz group Three Eighths Blue.

"Our first effort was a true delight and we are all looking forward to hearing the sounds of swing in the Great Room. For many, these sounds will bring back cherished memories, but for younger members of the audience they could promise new memories," Dr. Jennett said.

He noted that performances like "Swingin' at the U" will be commonplace as the University continues its Phase Three expansion.

"With the completion of our $15 million Fine and Performing Arts Center, events like this will play a premier role in keeping cultural enrichment activities strong in Laredo. We encourage the community to attend this concert and help the University raise funds for music equipment for its students," Jennett said.
