New Common State Application Being Utilized by A&M International

Students across the state now have an easy way to apply for admission to a Texas public university by using a new common application available at Texas A&M International University and all state public universities.

Maria R. Rosillo, A&M International director of admissions, said the common application developed under a legislative initiative and involved the State's admissions directors.

"The common application came about through 1997 legislation sponsored by State Senator Teel Bivins (R-Amarillo) that directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to develop a common application. An advisory committee made up of directors of admission from public universities across the state developed two versions, one for first-time freshmen and one for transfer students," Rosillo explained.

Approximately 600,000 copies of the common applications have been mailed to the state's high schools and community colleges. Students may also request a copy from their high school or college counselor. The application can also be printed from the THECB's web site at www.thcb.state.tx.us, by clicking on "Starting Points for Students" and clicking again on "Common Application for Texas Students."

Rosillo explained that the common application can also be completed and submitted electronically to one or more public universities in the state via the internet address www.applytexas.org.

"The availability of the electronic version of the common application adds a new dimension to the process of applying for University admission in Texas. Thousands of electronic applications have already been received by the State's universities," she noted.

Rosillo noted that the common state application is important because it removes another barrier that might keep students from enrolling at a university.

"This takes us further down the road toward ensuring full participation, access and success in higher education for all Texans wanting to begin their education or continue to work on a four-year degree," she concluded.
