University Holds Workshop for Nurses, Health Professionals

Nurses and other health professionals are invited to attend a free mini-workshop at Texas A&M International University on the electronic databases available at the University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

"Nursing Databases," a 30-minute free mini-workshop, will be held on the first floor of the Killam Library on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 2:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. It is open to anyone in the community. Registration is not required to attend.

Reference librarian Lyndra Givens explained the mini-workshop will show Library users how to conduct research using the Internet, online resources, and electronic databases available in the Killam Library.

"The Killam Library has over 6,000 electronic periodicals plus full-text and indexing databases. The mini-workshop will provide instruction on using some of the best resources for health professionals including CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature), Academic Universe, Health Reference Center, and Medline," Givens said.

CINAHL provides abstracts of articles from over 950 English-language nursing and allied health journals.

Academic Universe offers full-text online news, business, legal, legislative, and regulatory information, updated daily.

Medline contains 9 million references and abstracts covering topics in medicine, surgery, dentistry, nursing, and health care management.

Health Reference Center covers a range of topics--from fitness to prescription drugs--through full-text articles and abstracts from newspapers and popular magazines.

Additional mini-workshops for educators and business persons are also scheduled. They are: "Educational Databases" on Wednesday, Mar. 3, 4 and 7 p.m.; "Business and Demographics," Tuesday, Mar 23, 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; "International Relations," Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.; and, scheduled in February, March, and April, "Searching the Online Book Catalog," "Full-Text Journal Databases," "Research on the Internet," and "Evaluating Web Information Sources."
