University Seeks Submissions for Poster Demonstration

Organizers of a Poster Demonstration sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Minor Program at Texas A&M International University invite members of the community who have an interest in women's and gender issues to submit posters for the event.

Local and area high school students are especially encouraged to submit works for the Poster Demonstration, which will be exhibited at the University Mar. 19 - 21.

"The Poster Demonstration is a great opportunity for the community to present research and discuss their work with members of the University community in an informal setting," explained event coordinator Dr. Roberto Heredia.

Persons who wish to submit posters for the Demonstration should contact Dr. Heredia, 326-2637, or Dr. Carol Waters, 326-2635, by Friday, Mar. 5. Drs. Heredia and Waters may also be contacted by mail at Texas A&M International University, 5201 University Blvd., Laredo, TX 78041, or by e-mail at rheredia@tamiu.edu or cwaters@tamiu.edu respectively. Correspondence should include a brief description of the proposed poster along with the submitter's name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address.

Posters should be submitted by Mar. 26, set up on Mar. 26 between 12 - 5 p.m., and picked up Mar. 27 between 6 - 7 p.m.

Subject matter for submitted posters may include any study or research related to women or gender, such as gender roles in the work place, women's health, research by or about women, gender roles in society, and women in history, science, business, politics, technology, literature, or the arts.

Submitted posters must be freestanding and should be constructed on a standard-sized trifold cardboard display form or on foam core board cut to standard size. Both trifold cardboard forms and foam core boards are available at local craft stores.

Posters may be created in English or Spanish and should include a clear, succinct statement of the research project or study, a typed or printed abstract or summary, plus text and visuals such as graphics, pictures, or charts which illustrate main points. If a poster summarizes a thesis, article, or report, copies of it may be placed next to the poster.

The Poster Demonstration will open with a reception to be held on the evening of Friday, Mar. 26 in the Great Room of the University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (room 319). The reception will also feature the "Brindis a la Mujer," a toast on behalf of women in the United States and Mexico. The Poster Demonstration will continue through Mar. 27 as part of the University's annual Primavera Conference.
