Oncologist Speaks at A&M International's A.R. Sanchez Distinguished Lecture Series

Texas A&M International University invites the community to attend the third of its 1998-1999 A.R. Sanchez Distinguished Lecture Series, featuring oncologist Dr. Daniel Von Hoff on "Care for the Patient with Cancer: Progress and Prevention."

The lecture is scheduled for Thursday, March 4 at 7 p.m. at the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Von Hoff, director of the Institute for Drug Development, Cancer Therapy and Research Center of South Texas, is also a clinical professor of medicine in the division of medical oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. As the director of the research center, Von Hoff investigates the development of new anticancer agents and gene amplification.

Van Hoff's lecture should give participants a taste of the latest developments in the ever-changing field of oncology and the efforts being made to combat cancer, said Dr. Jerry Thompson, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at A&M International.

"We invite the community to attend Dr. Von Hoff's and the remaining two lectures of the A.R. Sanchez Distinguished Lecture Series and gain further appreciation for these speakers' lifetime accomplishments," Thompson said.

A graduate of Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, Von Hoff performed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. His subspecialty training followed at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. He joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1979 and the Cancer Therapy & Research Center in 1988.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the Southwest Oncology Group. He is currently serving as president-elect of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Among other things, he is the editor emeritus of Investigational New Drugs - The Journal of New Anticancer Agents, and the associate editor of Cancer Research and Clincial Care Research.

His honors include Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1992; Roswell Park Memorial Institute Distinguished Lecturer, 1989; Masters of Oncology Lectureship, University of Wisconsin, 1991; Hamilton Lecture, University of Rochester, 1992; Therapeutics Frontier Award from the American Society of Clinical Pharmacy, 1992; Myron Karon Memorial Lectureship, 1993; Carroll College Alumni Award, 1994; EORTC Michel Clavel Lectureship, 1994; Robert DePalma Memorial Lecture, Allegheny General Hospital Medical College, 1994; the K. Bagshawe Honorary Lecture, British Association for Cancer Research; and the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award, American Association for Cancer Research, 1997.

The remaining Sanchez lectures to come include those of Robert Flynn, titled, "Truth and Beauty: Confessions of a Hoehand" (April 5) and Nobel Prize winner Dr. Mario Molina, with "Depletion of the Ozone Layer: Consequences for the Environment" (April 22).
