Three A&M International Profs to Present at TSHA Meet

Three Texas A&M International University faculty members will present papers at the Texas State Historical Association's annual meeting in Dallas March 4-6.

In recognition of his distinction in historic research writing, A&M International Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities Dr. Jerry Thompson has been selected to deliver the TSHA's Fellows' Luncheon address.

Dr. Thompson's topic will be "When General Albert Sidney Johnston Came Home to Texas: Reconstruction Politics and the Reburial of a Hero."

Dr. Michael Yoder, A&M International assistant professor of geography, is scheduled to present his "Drive-in Commercial Landscapes in Laredo, 1920-1945: Architectural Dissonance and Spatial Mismatch" as part of a session exploring "Architecture and Society in Two Texas-Mexican Border Cities (Brownsville and Laredo), 1920-1945."

Jaclyn Jeffrey, visiting instructor in anthropology and journalism, will present "The Remarkable Success of New Zapata," as part of a session titled "Displaced by Falcon Dam: The Consequences of Resettlement for Zapata, Texas."

Laredoan Antonio R. Sanchez Jr. will preside over a session on "Historical Identity and the Rio Grande Country: Views from Texas and Mexico," that will feature a presentation by Manuel R. Ceballos of Nuevo Laredo's El Colegio de la Frontera Norte on "The Construction of Identities on the Rio Grande: The Two Laredos after Guadalupe Hidalgo."

Organized on March 2, 1897, the Texas State Historical Association is the oldest learned society in the state. Its mission is to foster the appreciation, understanding, and teaching of the rich and unique history of Texas and by example and through programs and activities encourage and promote research, preservation, and publication of historical material affecting the State of Texas.

At the invitation of the president of the University of Texas, the Association established its headquarters on the campus soon after its inception in 1897, and it has remained there ever since.
