Election Filing Deadline Is Friday for University's Student Government

Texas A&M International University students who wish to run for office in the University's Student Government Association (SGA) have until 5 p.m. Friday, Mar. 26 to file a Declaration of Candidacy form.

Filing forms are available from the University's Office of Student Development, located in the Kinesiology/Convocation Building room 107; the SGA, located in the Kinesiology/Convocation Building, room 107F; and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, room 160.

Offices open for election in the Executive branch of the SGA are president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

In the Legislative branch, 12 senatorial positions are open, two each from the College of Arts and Humanities, College of Business Administration, College of Education, and College of Science and Technology, and two each for Senator At Large and Graduate Senator At Large.

Seven justices positions are open, one from each College, two At Large justices, and one Appellate Justice At Large.

All candidates must have a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.25 at election time and must maintain a 2.0 GPA during the term of office. Candidates must also be enrolled for at least six credit hours per regular semester. Candidates must sign a Grade Release Statement when filing so GPA may be verified.

Candidates seeking the presidency must meet additional qualifications.

Students who file a Declaration of Candidacy form and meet all qualifications may campaign from April 5 - 9. SGA elections will be held April 12 - 13/, from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. daily, in the portico of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

The Student Government Association, an officially recognized student organization, participates in the decision-making processes affecting University students. The SGA's primary purpose is to represent the concerns and interests of students and to provide or assist in providing programs for betterment and enrichment of the campus community.
