A special commissioned portrait that will forever capture the partnership that brought a new home for higher education to South Texas was unveiled in ceremonies Saturday, March 13 at Texas A&M International University.

Sue and Radcliffe Killam were honored by friends and A&M International officials at the reception held in the library that bears their name.

President Charles Jennett said the portrait, by acclaimed artist John Boyd Martin, celebrates a partnership of giving.

"Sue and Radcliffe Killam's hands have cupped the shared future of generations now and future. They have helped to assure that higher education has a home in South Texas and that the citizens of our area can more readily grasp a more meaningful future for themselves and their children," Dr. Jennett said.

He noted the Killams' long partnership with the University has enhanced the community's quality of life and made it possible for the dreams of higher education to come true at home.

"Their long partnership with the University included the provision of 300 acres of land for Texas' newest University, scholarship funds for deserving students, the establishment of a Distinguished Professorship and programmatic support for the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade. Quite simply, they have made a profound difference for generations to come, " Jennett said.

Joined by his wife Sue and surrounded by friends and University members, Killam said both were honored by the portrait and encouraged additional support for the University and its mission.

"We are much humbled by the honor this portrait does us. This campus offers unprecedented opportunities for our students. This vision and effort must continue and I would remind all that no matter where you went to school, this University deserves and merits your support. It is not a gift, but an investment that will bring important returns for generations to come," Killam said.

The new portrait will be displayed in the lobby of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.
