A&M International College of Ed Faculty Awarded TEA Research Grants

Six members of the Texas A&M International University's College of Education faculty have been named recipients of Commissioner's Research Grants, a program established by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and The Texas A&M University System's "Partnership for Public Schools."

The awards, for the 1999-2000 cycle, are focused on various critical areas of education from K-12 and total $10,000, said Dean of the College of Education Dr. Rosa Maria Vida.

"These research grants will provide needed and relevant information on some of the most critical needs in education today ranging from technology in the classroom to the shortages of teachers in those classrooms. Our faculty's expertise and dedication to their profession and its betterment are well-recognized by these prestigious awards, " Dr. Vida said.

The faculty receiving the awards and their research projects funded are:

Dr. Miroslava Vargas, Assistant Professor, Department of Special Populations, for her study on the underlying factors associated with half-day/full-day kindergarten.

Dr. Carolyn McCreight, Assistant Professor, Department of Professional Programs, for her study on Best Practices being applied in Disciplinary Alternative Education Programs.

Dr. David Herrington, Assistant Professor, Department of Professional Programs, for his study that surveys technology usage in classrooms across the State.

Dr. Linda Medearis, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Special Populations, and Dr. Patricia Lozano, Assistant Professor and Alternative Certification Program Director, for their study of eligibility requirements for Pre-Kindergarten Programs.

Dr. Humberto Gonzalez, Assistant Professor, Department of Professional Programs, for his survey regarding teacher shortages across the State.

The initiative is intended to promote educational research partnerships between the A&M System's academic researchers and state policy makers. The resulting research may guide and support future state education policy.
