Texas A&M International University's High Twisters student dance troupe performed this past weekend at the Universal Dance Association's Texas High School Championships in Austin.

High Twisters sponsor Araceli Rangel said the invitation was a first for the group, which has only been in existence slightly over a year.

"This is the first time we've been invited to perform by this group. The participants included high schools from throughout Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico who competed in categories including jazz, pom-pom, officer, and solo.

Previously, the UDA has invited dance groups from the University of Texas at Austin, UT-Pan American and Sam Houston State University, all featuring units that have a long-established presence on their campuses.

The High Twisters perform at various university and community functions year-round and most recently performed at the Official Kickoff Concert for the George Washington's Birthday Celebration Association at Texas A&M International University. The group's presentation of the Ike and Tina Turner standard, "Proud Mary," was a crowd-pleaser.

For additional information on the High Twisters, please contact Rangel at 326.2225.

University office hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
