A&M International Faculty Member Wins History Prize

A Texas A&M International University faculty member's article on history has been selected as a winner of a prestigious prize awarded by the Society of Military History.

Dr. Xiaoming Zhang, assistant professor of history, submitted the article, "China and the Air War in Korea, 1950-1953" and became one of the four winners of the 1999 Moncado Prize. Zhang's article was published in the April 1998 issue of The Journal of Military History.

The Moncado Prize is the oldest award presented by the Society for Military History. Candidates' articles are judged on scholarship, presentation, and originality as well as the degree to which they make a significant contribution to knowledge in the field of military history.

The Society will formally present the award to Zhang at an award lucheon scheduled for April 16 at State College, Pennsylvania.

Zhang, originally from Nanjing, China, specializes in the areas of Chinese history, Sino-American relations, modern U.S. political science and U.S. foreign relations.

He earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa. His master's degree in history is also from Iowa. He holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from the Nanjing Teachers University of China. He has been living in the United States for the past 11 years.

Zhang also won the Moncado Prize in 1997 for his article, "The Vietnam War, 1964-1969: A Chinese Perspective," published in the October 1996 issue of The Journal of Military History.

Prior to joining A&M International, Zhang was a lecturer in Chinese language and culture and assistant professor of history at Texas Tech University.

Other positions as a lecturer included those at Mount Mercy College, the University of Iowa, and Heihai University of China.
