A&M International Announces Winners of Art Contest

Texas A&M International University held an awards ceremony and reception in the University's Great Room to honor local and area high school students who participated in the University's Spring 1999 "Alcohol Abuse Prevention Art Contest."

Scholarships to A&M International were presented to six winning entrants during the award ceremony. Winners were: First Place, Adriana Gonzalez of Cigarroa High School for an entry titled "Death in a Bottle;" Second Place, Edelmiro Ramirez, United South High School, for "Alcohol Destroys People and Relatives;" and Third Place, Alfredo Garcia, Cigarroa High School, for "Don't Be."

Honorable Mention winners were Jesus Garza, Martin High School, for "Alcohol Abuse;" Leslie J. Trowbridge, Cigarroa High School, for "Alcohol--A Game That Ends in Death;" and Mildred Gonzalez, St. Augustine High School, for "Message in a Bottle."

First, second, and third place winners were awarded scholarships to A&M International of $1,000, $750, and $500, respectively. The three honorable mention winners each received $250 scholarships.

Winning entries were selected by Janet Krueger, assistant professor of Arts at A&M International; Arturo Sanchez, III, president of the University's Student Government Association; and Margarita Araiza, director of the Webb County Heritage Foundation.

The awards ceremony began with a welcome from University president Dr. Charles Jennett and opening remarks from art contest co-organizer David VerMilyea, director of Student Development at A&M International. Master of ceremonies was Dr. Stephen Brown, dean of Student Affairs. A reception honoring all contest participants followed.
