A&M International Students Compete in Computer Programming Competition

A group of students majoring in computer-based information systems (CIS) at Texas A&M International University recently participated in a national computer programming competition that drew students from 87 colleges and universities.

The fourth annual collegiate competition, organized by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), was held at the University of Texas at Arlington March 25-27. Besides A&M International, participating students included those from universities such as Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Southern Methodist, Tarleton State, Louisiana State, Virginia Commonwealth, Western Carolina, Boise State, Tampa, Purdue and City University of New York.

The AITP is the leading professional organization for those in the information systems profession. The San Antonio chapter of the AITP sponsors A&M International's student chapter.

Students who competed and their categories included: Leo Lozano (VisualBASIC and Web Page design); Ana Alfaro (VisualBASIC); Jirasak Dumrongstein (Visual BASIC and Web Page design); Pong Supanichvorapart (VisualBASIC and Web Page design); Gene Gutierrez (VisualBASIC); Hugo Garcia (C++); Karla Stuermer (C++); Jea Jun Park (VisualBASIC); Noel Ruiz (Visual BASIC and Web Page design); Pedro Saenz (Web Page design).

Dr. Stephen Lunce, associate professor of information systems, accompanied the students as a manager and coach of the team.

"It was a pleasure and an honor for me to accompany the students to a competition that not only encourages them to gain a profound knowledge of the profession but also fosters networking among students," Lunce said.

In addition to the programming competition, students heard presentations by academic and industry leaders such as former presidential candidate, Ross Perot, of Perot Data Systems. A job fair and several professional training seminars also formed part of the event.
