Claudia Rodríguez, a Texas A&M International University accounting student, saw her mother struggle to secure a permanent job without the advantage of a college education and realized she would choose to pursue higher education upon high school graduation.

"I wanted my future to be different for me," Rodríguez said, "I knew I couldn't depend on anyone but myself. I had so many goals that I had set up for myself to achieve."

Today, Rodríguez is glad she decided to make higher education her main priority.

She recently received the Accounting Excellence Award, an annual recognition given to top accounting students by the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Rodríguez, who maintains a grade point average of 3.75 in her major area of studies, said she was honored by the recognition.

"I was very honored. It means a lot to me because I put a lot of effort and dedication into my studies," Rodríguez said, "I want to thank all of my professors for inspiring me to continue on with my education."

Rodríguez, who will receive her undergraduate degree in August, said she decided to pursue excellence in her studies because she also wanted her family to see anyone can overcome difficulties. Upon graduation, she plans to seek a master's degree in accountancy and become an accountant.

Rodríguez also keeps busy in the campus community as a member of the A&M International chapter of Sigma Beta Delta, a prestigious business honors society.

As she readies for graduation, Rodríguez thanked her mother for supporting her throughout her university education.
