A&M International's Dr. Zhang Named University Scholar of the Year

Dr. Xiaoming Zhang, Assistant Professor of History at Texas A&M International University, has been named University Scholar of the Year.

The honor is bestowed to a faculty member annually by A&M International to provide public recognition for exceptional professionalism.

The award was announced during the University's Spring Commencement, where Dr. Zhang was presented with a medallion that will be worn as part of his academic regalia. He will also receive a small stipend and a designated reserved parking space for one year.

A native of Nanjing, China, Dr. Zhang joined the faculty of A&M International in 1996. He specializes in the areas of Chinese history, Sino-American relations, modern US political science and US foreign relations.

He earned his Ph.D. and master's degrees in history from the University of Iowa. He also holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from the Nanjing Teachers University of China.

Zhang was one of three College Scholars of the Year for 1998-1999. He was named Scholar of the Year for the College of Arts and Humanities.

Dr. Jacqueline R. Mayfield, Assistant Professor of Management and Business Communications, was named Scholar of the Year for the College of Business Administration.

Dr. Cathy Sakta, Associate Professor of Education, was named Scholar of the Year for the College of Education.

The College Scholar of the Year Award and University Scholar of the Year Award were developed by the University's faculty organization, the Faculty Senate, to annually recognize outstanding professionalism among the members of the University faculty.
