A new initiative at Texas A&M International University aimed at strengthening community partnerships that help to advance the University's mission was launched at a dinner-reception earlier this month.

"A&M International Campus Partners," a cross-section of Laredoans interested in assisting the University's continued growth and development, met for the first time at a reception held in the Great Room of the University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

University president Dr. Charles Jennett provided an update on programs and development to date. State Representative Dr. Henry Cuellar presented a legislative review of the 76th Legislature's actions. Keynote speaker for the event was Hank Sames III.

Vice president for institutional advancement Michelle A. Alexander said the group will meet quarterly and provide members with a range of opportunities for involvement in assisting the University.

"We consider our Campus Partners to be dynamic partners in the University's growth and look forward to working with them to meet the challenges and opportunities of the new millennium," Alexander said.

Alexander said some of the areas the Campus Partners will be involved in addressing are advocacy issues, services to students and campus and program development.

She said this meeting was designed to provide a snapshot of the University to date, its programs, plans for the future and opportunities for involvement.

Presentations were provided by the University's key academic and service areas and deans of its four colleges. Members had an opportunity to select those areas that they would most like to be involved in and meet with University student leaders, faculty members and administrators.

Randy and Nancy Blair, longtime University friends, are co-chairs of the initiative.

Alexander said the group will meet again in the Fall.
