A&M International Holds Flamenco Dance Workshop June 25 - 27

Texas A&M International University will hold a three-day Flamenco Workshop June 25 - 27 to be conducted by guest instructor Lilia Lloréns, an internationally known dancer and teacher.

Workshop organizer Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of dance at A&M International, said the workshop is for teens and adults who have intermediate or advanced skills in Flamenco dance.

The three-day workshop will be conducted on Friday, June 25, 6 - 10 p.m.; Saturday, June 26, 9 a.m. -1 p.m., 2 - 4:30 p.m., and 5 -8 p.m.; and Sunday, June 27, 9 a.m. -1 p.m. It will be held at the A&M International campus, on the second floor of the Kinesiology/Convocation Building, and at the Laredo Little Theatre.

Persons who wish to participate in the workshop must pre-register by calling Leyendecker at 326-2640. Class size is limited.

Lilia Lloréns started intensive studies in music, ballet, and Spanish dance at an early age in her native country, Cuba. She began her training in Flamenco under the tutorship of Luisa Triana, and later continued her studies with Carmen Mora, Manolo Marin, and Paco Fernández. She continues training with world renowned dance masters, here and in Spain.

An exciting exponent of Flamenco, Lloréns is known for her exquisite technique and dramatic style. She has appeared with Luisa Triana and Jose Molina, Manolo Rivera, Juan Talavera, Pablo Rodarte, Lola Montes and Luis Rivera among others. She appears regularly with her troupe, "Ecos de España," throughout Southern California.

Lloréns currently teaches Flamenco, Spanish Dance, and World Dance at Orange Coast College in California, where she has been a faculty member since 1988. She has taught and choreographed Flamenco and Spanish Dance for the University of California-Irvine, Golden West College, Mira Costa College and has worked for Ice Capades as a dance consultant and instructor. She conducts workshops throughout the United States. Lloréns holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from UCI.
