New A&M International Dean Brings Vision to College of Business

Dr. John P. Kohl, the new dean of Texas A&M International University's College of Business Administration, said he plans to lead the College into the millennium with increased service for Laredo, South Texas and the world community.

Kohl, who joined A&M International earlier this month, said the College's priorities are to secure accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), launch a Ph.D. Program in business, expand course inventory and work closely with other A&M International colleges in cross-disciplinary initiatives.

The Ph.D. in international trade, which is currently under program planning, will bring wide recognition to the entire community once it is established, Kohl said.

"This program will increase the services our community will be able to offer to the people of South Texas and the world," Kohl said.

The College is also developing new programs in preparation for the establishment of the Center for Western Hemispheric Trade on campus. The center, included in A&M International's Phase III expansion, will consist of classrooms as well as conference, distance learning and research areas, he said.

"I hope we will continue receiving community support. Our students have a gold mine here as far as career development," he said.

Kohl joined A&M International after having served as chair of the department of management in the College of Business at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) for 11 years.

In addition to his Ph.D. in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University, Kohl holds an M.S. in counseling and an M.S. in management science from the University of Central Texas, a Master of Divinity in theology from Yale University and a B.A. in English from Moravian College.

Kohl's primary fields of research include organizational behavior and personnel management with supporting fields in social research methods and counselor education.

He is the co-author of more than 80 publications in numerous professional and academic journals and has written on topics such as equal employment opportunity, sexual harassment in the workplace, equal pay, religious discrimination and bilingual requirements.

With Paul S. Greenlaw, he is co-author of Personnel Management: Managing Human Resources (New York: Harper and Rowe) and its accompanying Instructor's Manual.

Prior to joining UNLV, Kohl was a faculty member at San Jose State University, the University of Texas at El Paso and The Pennsylvania State University.

In addition to his business background, Kohl has a 21-year career in the U.S. Army and is currently in the Army reserves holding the rank of Colonel. He has also been a chaplain in the Army and a minister for the United Church of Christ.

Among his awards, honors and memberships are the 1990 and 1997 UNLV Distinguished Researcher Award; "Who's Who in the South and Southwest," 1975, 1977 and 1985 and "Outstanding Young Men of America," 1971, 1975 and 1979.
