Summer Enrollment Climbs 11% at A&M International

This summer, more students are opting to cool their heels in Summer Session II classes at Texas A&M International University.

Enrollment is up 11% with 1,442 students enrolled. Enrollment for Summer Session II last year was 1,304. Semester Credit Hours (SCH) are also up 14% to 6,198. Last Summer Session II, SCH was 5,434.

Registrar Barbara Lunce attributed the enrollment increase to four factors: special summer programming, returning teachers, concurrent enrollment and recent high school graduates getting a head start on their baccalaureate degree.

"This summer we've been offering special summer programming including a Bridge program for regional high school students, and concurrent enrollment classes available to eligible Distinguished Academic Program (DAP) students.

"Historically, we also see teachers returning in the summer to work on graduate degrees and additional certifications. Finally, many of this May's high school students are foregoing a summer vacation to get a head start on their higher education," Lunce explained.

Summer Session I enrollment was also up 13% and Lunce said both increases bode well for the upcoming Fall semester.

"We're anticipating a very good Fall enrollment as many summer students naturally continue into the following semester," she said.

Early registration for the Fall semester is underway through July 30. General registration is Aug. 23-24 with Fall semester classes set to begin Aug. 25.
