Texas A&M International University invites the community to attend the first of its 1999-2000 A.R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series featuring the Mayor of Alburquerque, Jim Baca.

Hosted by the University's College Arts and Humanities, the lecture is scheduled for Sept. 14, from 7-9 p.m. at the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (Room 319). Baca will lecture on "Wilderness: The Conservation Fight in the American West."

Elected Mayor of Albuquerque in Oct. 1997, Baca has complemented his duties as a public official with a concern for the environment by leading an administration that strongly supports public land and watershed protection. With his steely determination to create effective policies beneficial to all citizens, he has set a new standard for environmental leadership.

Baca's experience in western politics, public affairs, public land issues and the media is highly respected. He has served in numerous public service posts including that of New Mexico director of Alcohol and Beverage Control, press secretary to New Mexico Gov. Bruce King, assistant to Albuquerque Mayor Harry Kinney and general manager of the Rio Grande Conservancy District.

In addition, he was twice elected New Mexico State Commissioner of Public Lands and served as the U.S. Director of the Federal Bureau of Land Management under the Clinton administration.

Baca is a national consultant on public land and conservation issues.

The Albuquerque native received a bachelor's degree in business from the University of New Mexico. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he is also a former television news anchorman at KOAT-TV and KOB-TV.
