A&M International Celebrates Former Fulbright Scholar's Success

Texas A&M International University's College of Arts and Humanities will celebrate the academic success of a former guest Fulbright Scholar with a reception and lecture scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 7-9 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Dr. Manuel Ceballos, currently a researcher at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, was recently selected as member of the prestigious Mexican Academy of History, equivalent to the Royal Academy of History of Madrid.

The event is free and the community is invited to attend.

Ceballos will present a lecture in Spanish on "The Invention of the Border and the Historic Northeast."

An author of 65 publications including books, academic articles and chapters in books, Ceballos was inducted into the Academy in recognition of his years of scholarly achievements focusing on the preservation of Mexico's history.

Born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Ceballos received his doctoral degree in history from the Colegio de México (Mexico City) in 1990. He served as researcher in the Colegio de México's Center for the Study of History from 1985-1987 and as director of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Nuevo Laredo from 1988-1994 and in Monterrey in 1995.

He taught Mexican history while at A&M International as a Fulbright Scholar from 1990 to 1991.

Ceballos is also director of Nuevo Laredo's Municipal Historic Archive and has provided consulting services to the U.S. National Park Service in historic questions relevant to the U.S.-Mexico War.

He has taught courses in higher education institutions such as El Colegio de México, Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, Universidad Iberoamericana, Universidad de Monterrey, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México.
