Student Gets Valuable Experience as A&M International Student Leader
Gilbert Cardenas, a junior majoring in political science at Texas A&M International University, is getting valuable exposure to the political process through active involvement in student government and a paid summer internship.
The 1997 Alexander High School student says such involvements are providing him with some unique insights into his major field of study.
"I've had some remarkable experiences as president of our A&M International Student Ambassadors, as a justice at large with the Student Government Association and as a member of The Texas A&M University System's Chancellor's Student Advisory Board. I think these involvements have brought new dimension to my classroom learning," Cardenas said.
"This sort of experience is something that I truly cherish about A&M International. I don't think I could have had such a broad range of similar opportunities at another university and I'm making the most of it," he added.
Cardenas, who holds a 3.541 GPA, was recently named the first recipient of the Dr. Henry Cuellar Endowed Scholarship in Political Science. The prestigious scholarship includes a paid summer internship with State Representative Cuellar.
"Again, this is a dynamic opportunity for me to see the political process in action. I'm honored to be selected for this and know that it's going to be a valuable part of my education, and I believe will give me an added measure of real-world experience for grad school," he said.
The son of Humberto and Agustina Cardenas, he plans to pursue a graduate degree at the George Bush School of Public Policy in College Station, Texas.
The Dr. Henry Cuellar Endowed Scholarship was established by community leaders, colleagues and friends of Dr. Cuellar. When fully funded, it will support a $1000 annual scholarship.
University president Dr. Charles Jennett said the University is honored to be home to the Dr. Henry Cuellar Endowed Scholarship. He said he admires Cuellar for his personal educational initiative and for his vision in wanting to help others like Cardenas.
"We admire his initiative and drive and know that his support of higher education has made a crucial difference in increasing State-wide access to higher education. As a University alumnus, we also consider him an inspiration to our students, all students and the people of Texas, " Jennett said.
Registration for the Spring Semester is January 10-11. Classes begin Jan. 12.
