210 Concurrent Enrollment Scholarships Begin This Spring at A&M International

This Spring Semester at Texas A&M International University, local high school students will have an opportunity to get a head start on their higher education with a new Concurrent Enrollment Scholarship initiative.

The program will enable 210 high school students to receive scholarships of $275 each for classes taken at the University.

Mary Trevino, acting associate vice president for Student Services, said 30 of these scholarships will be available at each of seven local high schools.

"This is a tremendous program that can truly help students to accelerate their progress on their undergraduate degree. We've been tracking growing interest in this initiative from local counselors and are excited about being able to address this need," Trevino explained.

In order to qualify for the program, students must have taken their college entrance exams, successfully passed all three portions of TASP, and be admitted to A&M International. An application form is available at the University or from high school counselors.

The selection criteria will review class rank, grade point average, and activities. Students should list all clubs and organizations you are currently active in, position or office, years in the club or organization. Students should include community service with hours per week and any honors, awards, or distinctions received.

Applications and all materials are due no later than 7 p.m., Jan. 5, 2000 and must be postmarked by this date if mailed. Applications received after the due date will not be considered.

Recipients will be notified of their award by telephone no later than January 7. High school counselors will be faxed a list of the students awarded who attend their high school, no later than January 7, 2000.

University offices close for the holidays Dec. 23 and reopen on Monday, Jan. 3 at 8 a.m.

Registration for the Spring Semester is Jan. 10 from 1- 7 p.m. and Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Classes begin Jan. 12.
