A new graduate program in Public Administration has become one of Texas A&M International University's fastest growing programs.

Initiated last Fall, the interdisciplinary program has generated strong local interest from students who are attracted to its flexibility, said Dr. Nasser Momayezi, department chair of social sciences at the University's College of Arts and Humanities.

"This program has proven especially popular with our students because it's interdisciplinary, flexible, and doesn't require extensive stem, or preparation work. We are seeking a diverse class of students that bring with them diverse undergraduate preparation and real-world experiences," Dr. Momayezi said.

"We're seeing students that come to us with undergraduate degrees in business, fine arts, social sciences and others. Some are already working in public service positions and others are looking to begin a new career direction. We believe that this diversity of students offers a unique program strength and creates an especially engaging learning environment," he added.

The 42-hour program traditionally begins in the Fall, but the University will work with students who want to begin initial coursework at any time.

Momayezi said the 24 students currently enrolled in the program have indicated that the degree will have special value to them in a variety of career goals.

"Some are seeking a graduate degree that will enhance their chance for promotion, others are preparing themselves for planned positions with local, state or federal agencies. Many hope to be able to work in the non-profit sector. We've even got some students who are targeting positions as city managers," he added.

The program has a special champion in former city mayor Aldo Tatangelo, he noted.

"Former mayor Tatangelo has provided a $25,000 Endowed Scholarship in Public Administration which will serve to attract additional students with an opportunity to receive assistance with student tuition, books and fees," he explained.
